Music Genres
Music genre are categories of music pieces that share a certain style and distinctive qualities. Music may also be categorized by non-musical criteria such as geographical origin, though a single geographical category will normally include a wide variety of sub-genres. A music genre could be defined by the techniques, the styles, the context and the themes.
Although there are many music genres, it is possible to group them together into a number of overlapping major groupings:
Pop Music
Pop, short for popular music, refers to a specific traits of tunes such as a danceable beat, simple melodies, and repetitive structure so that people can catch on in easily. Early forms of pop music began with Ragtime, swing, and jazz — any music form that does not conform with the classical standard.
Urban Music
The term urban music or urban contemporary was coined by New York DJ Frankie Crocker in the mid 1970s. Urban playlist is primarily a mix of hip hop, rap, contemporary R&B, and, sometimes, Caribbean music such as reggae, soca and reggaeton.
Rock Music
Rock music finds its roots to the advent of Rock and Roll in the 1950s. In the late 1960s, rock music was blended with folk to create folk rock, and with jazz, to create jazz-rock fusion. In the 1970s, rock incorporated influences from soul, funk, and latin music.
Country Music
Country Music is a blend of pop and traditional musical forms in the Southern United States.
Dance / Electronic Music
Dance music, electronic music, or simply Electronica is a music genres that is largely born from the 1970s disco music.
Indie and Folk Music
Folk or Indie music is somewhat synonymous with traditional music. But folk music, in the original sense of the term, is music by and for the common people usually shared by a community.
Jazz and Blues Music
Jazz music is actually rooted in Blues music. The first jazz music originated in New Orleans, Louisiana around the start of the 20th century.
Christian Music
Christian or gospel music, in its popular form, was adapted from church music and singing style.
Classical Music
Classical music is a very broad term referring to music produced in, or rooted in the traditions of, Western art, religious traditions, and concert music. Thus, this musical form encompasses a broad period of time.
World Music
World music is like a melting pot of musical forms and beats from all over the world.
Soundtracks for Movies, Films or Musicales
The modern definition of music from soundtracks are songs or tunes made specifically for a certain film, or television show, or a stage musicale.
